Audi continues its efforts to modernize its lineup, following the recent introduction of the A5 and A6 models. The latest addition is the mid-sized SUV, the Q5, though buyers will need to wait a bit longer before it hits the market.
Audi is pushing forward with its portfolio renewal. After unveiling the new A6 and A5 models, both in sedan and wagon versions, the automaker from Ingolstadt has now introduced the Q5. This new model takes full advantage of its updated platform.
The third generation of the Q5, built on the modernized PPC technical platform, features an SUV that has grown slightly to 4.72 meters in length. It sports a more athletic look than its predecessors. The upward-sloping line from the lower body up to the rear bumper gives the SUV a sharper side profile. The rear is cleanly designed, featuring large, smooth surfaces, a three-dimensional continuous light strip, and a bumper with an integrated diffuser.
For both front and rear lighting, Audi offers a full range of customization options, similar to those available for the A5 and A6 e-tron. For the first time in Europe, the Q5’s brake light area can be expanded, with graphics projected from the roof spoiler onto the upper part of the rear window. The optional OLED taillights can even communicate with the surroundings, for instance, by displaying clear symbols to alert others to accidents or breakdowns.
Inside, passengers will find a “digital stage,” which includes a curved OLED panorama display. This setup consists of an 11.9-inch central instrument and a 14.5-inch multimedia display. An additional 10.9-inch display is available for the front passenger side. A configurable head-up display is also offered as an option, which can control vehicle and infotainment functions. Audi has equipped the Q5 with all currently available assistance systems, some of which are optional extras. Standard features include rear parking assistance, lane departure warning, and an efficiency assistant.
The rear seats have been improved for greater flexibility compared to the second generation. They are now fully adjustable, allowing them to be moved longitudinally and adjusted in inclination. This enables the cargo space to expand from 520 liters to up to 1,473 liters.
Engine Options for the New Q5
At launch, the Q5 will be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or a similarly sized diesel engine, both producing 150 horsepower, according to Audi. Additionally, a high-performance SQ5 version with a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine delivering 367 horsepower will be available from the start. These engines are supported by a new mild-hybrid system with a 48-volt electrical system. This system’s drive train generator provides an additional 230 Newton meters of torque and up to 18 kW/24 horsepower, which is particularly useful during acceleration, maneuvering, or city driving. All-wheel drive is standard on the diesel and SQ5 models, while it is optional for the gasoline engine.
Two plug-in hybrids will be added later, with Audi claiming they can drive more than 80 kilometers purely on electric power.
The third generation of this midsize SUV is set to be delivered in the first quarter of 2025, with a starting price of at least 52,300 euros. With all-wheel drive, the gasoline model will cost 54,650 euros. The TDI version starts at 57,100 euros, and the SQ5 will be available from 82,900 euros. For comparison, the last base Q5 was the 35 TDI diesel with 163 horsepower, starting at 49,950 euros.
