Mazda and Panasonic Energy have formed a strategic partnership aimed at ensuring a stable battery supply and advancing technology development. The first electric vehicle on a new specialized platform is expected to be released in 2027, with production expanding in Japan.
A Long-Term Collaboration for Advanced Battery Supply
This agreement is part of a long-term partnership between Mazda and Panasonic, designed to ensure a stable supply of batteries while fostering the development of advanced technologies, according to an official statement.
A Specialized EV on a New Platform
The joint project, approved by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, is set to enhance battery production and development in Japan. Mazda aims to significantly expand its electric vehicle production by 2030 through a phased plan. A key milestone in this plan is the introduction of a new electric vehicle in 2027, built on a specially developed EV platform. This platform is Mazda’s response to evolving market demands and changing customer needs. It’s worth noting, however, that the upcoming all-electric Mazda 6 will not use this new platform.
Panasonic Energy will begin producing the required batteries in 2027 at its factories in Suminoe and Kaizuka, both located in Osaka. The company plans to increase its production capacity to 10 GWh per year by 2030, to meet the growing demand for high-performance batteries. Mazda will integrate these batteries into modules for use in its new electric vehicles.
Securing Battery Supply for Mazda
The Japanese government views battery technology as a critical component in its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. A major goal is to strengthen domestic battery supply chains to boost industrial competitiveness. Through close collaboration, Mazda and Panasonic Energy are not only enhancing domestic production but also securing the supply of cylindrical high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.
Kazuo Tadanobu, President and CEO of Panasonic Energy, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “Our collaboration with Mazda enables us to drive forward electric vehicle production and increase the competitiveness of Japan’s battery industry. We are committed to promoting a sustainable society and are determined to achieve this goal.”
Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro also highlighted the significance of the cooperation: “Mazda is fully committed to achieving carbon neutrality and advancing electrification. With Panasonic Energy’s high-performance, reliable batteries, we will develop unique electric vehicles that offer a perfect balance of design, comfort, and range, meeting the needs of our customers.”
