Joe finds Love in exclusive first look at’YOU’ season 2
Joe Goldberg has an obsession. Or he did.
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling 2014 novel of the same title, YOU introduced us to Joe (Penn Badgley), the magic literature obsessive who dropped for a woman called Beck (Elizabeth Lail) the second she walked into his bookstore. Just in the world of Joe, falling for someone meant stealing her phone, hacking into her daily life, and masturbating outside her apartment window. You can call him a stalker, or you may say he was madly in love. (He was unquestionably a stalker.)
But despite offering a fast paced, morally complex story, YOU‘s first season, which wrapped in November on Lifetime, did not make much of a splash…before it hit Netflix in late December. With the flowing giant reporting the series was on track to possess 40 million subscriber views in its first month, it was no surprise once the series moved to Netflix for year two. And while it’s going to currently be on a stage that eliminates network time restraints and limitations, viewers can expect more of what they adored the first time around. “Netflix was apparent they wanted us to provide them a show that was similar to season 1,” says showrunner Sera Gamble. “They basically said,’It is not broke, do not fix it'”
That is not to say the story will feel exactly the same. Much like from Kepnes’ 2016 followup Hidden Bodies, Joe is moving from New York to Los Angeles in season 2. It’s there that he’ll meet Love (Victoria Pedretti). “It is not that simple love-at-first-sight he might’ve been looking for a year or two ago,” Gamble says. “He’s another man. He has been through more.” And Love sees that Joe has suffered a great loss — without understanding the gory details — and considers him a”kindred spirit,” because Gamble puts it. “The conditions of his encounter with Love are very informed by what he went through Beck.”
They are also informed by the other woman in his lifetime. Season 1 ended with the series’ biggest deviation from the novels: Candace (Ambyr Childers), Joe’s ex, is alive and well! And he’ll be thrown by her . “She’s a survivor,” Gamble says. “And now she’s faced with some really hard decisions about how she is going to move forward.”
